Arrange pieces of flipchart paper on the wall in sequence for each scene of the song. Have the group present the finished story with simple illustrations to a beginner group, and then teach the beginners the chorus so that they can join in with the song. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span class=\"c1\">2. An advanced intermediate group could create their own comic song, following the same complex Gaelic <\/span>\r\n<span class=\"c1\">rhyme scheme<\/span><span class=\"c1\"> to celebrate their own local <\/span><span class=\"c1 c24\">heroic <\/span><span class=\"c1\">comic <\/span><span class=\"c1\">event. First, ask them to read \"A Fenian Tale\" from <a href=\"https:\/\/stfx.cairnrepo.org\/islandora\/object\/stfx%3A10841\">p. 24 of <em>Am Br\u00e0ighe<\/em> (Autumn 1993)<\/a>, which had been published earlier in Gaelic in the historic Gaelic newspaper <\/span><span class=\"c22\">Mac-Talla<\/span><span class=\"c1\">. <\/span><span class=\"c3 c1\">Then discuss the qualities most valued by the Fenians. It is a long list! What sort of person would possess these qualities today? Do we still value the same qualities in our leaders or heroes today?<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span class=\"c3 c1\">To aid them in creating their own verses, you could begin by removing a few keywords and asking them to replace the words to create new verses of their own. Have one person write these up on the whiteboard or flipchart at speed. Then allow the students to work individually to make a new verse using the word store they have compiled.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"c4 c13\"><span class=\"c1\">They would then proceed to create a story-song of their own, perhaps <\/span><span class=\"c1\">incorporating some of the qualities of the Fenians<\/span><span class=\"c3 c1\">: feats of strength, fighting against all odds \u201cup to nine to one,\u201d mastering 12 books of poetry\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"c4 c13\"><span class=\"c1\">It could be a chance to learn and make use of phrases of comparison such as <\/span><em><span class=\"c10\">cho laidir ri each <\/span><\/em><span class=\"c1\">or create new ones<\/span><span class=\"c10\">. <\/span><span class=\"c1\">And the common expression <\/span><em><span class=\"c10\">cothrom na Feinne <\/span><\/em><span class=\"c1 c14\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"c1 c24 c14\">the Fingalian fair play; <\/span><span class=\"c1 c14\">\u2014 i.e. one to one, <em>gaisgeach air gaisgeach agus laoch ri laoch\" <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/faclairgaidhligg01dwel\/page\/258\/mode\/2up?q=cothrom\">Dwelly<\/a>, <\/span><span class=\"c1 c24 c14\">cothrom<\/span><span class=\"c1 c14\">) <\/span><span class=\"c3 c1\">might be introduced, especially if the students are not familiar with it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p class=\"c4 c13\"><span class=\"c1\">Students could work together to create the song or individually to create their own story and songs in this way.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"textbox\">\r\n<h1 id=\"h.siina1pknnfw\" class=\"c41\"><span class=\"c22\">What Can Go Wrong and Dealing with Challenges<\/span><\/h1>\r\n<ul class=\"c35 lst-kix_izo6oie6jdgj-0 start\">\r\n \t<li class=\"c49 c13 c26 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c3 c1\"><span class=\"c3 c1\"><span class=\"c3 c1\">\u00a0If students lack experience or are uncomfortable telling a story within a group, \u00a0you might try a few simple warm up activities: \u00a0have them work in pairs telling the story to each other in their own words. Then, in a circle, tell the story going around the circle with each student adding one more sentence. \u00a0Repeat more than once and it will build confidence.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li class=\"c49 c13 c26 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c3 c1\">\u00a0If students lack confidence drawing or illustrating the story, remind them that they are telling a story with pictures. \u00a0The pictures do not need to be perfect. The story is all that matters. It might be an idea to break the ice with a game of pictionary as a warm up exercise.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul class=\"c35 lst-kix_dw8anzbg2ipt-0 start\">\r\n \t<li class=\"c13 c26 c49 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">If students are shy about singing within a wider group, remind them that the Gaelic people sang songs for many purposes, often to make work lighter (milking the cow, spinning wool), and often in a communal setting. It rarely involved singing to an audience from a stage! \u00a0It was about the song, and not the singer. In order to build confidence, make sure the students know the song so well that they do not need to look at the written words. This takes time. \u00a0Allow extra time if at all possible to learn the song really well from the start.\r\n<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h1><a id=\"appendixls\"><\/a>Appendix<\/h1>\r\n<div
